Workshop 1

Smartphone video essentials, a one-day course for beginners

This is the course I wish someone had given me when I started, a beginners' videography course built around the phone you already own, iPhone or Android. In one day you'll learn how to make your footage look and sound properly professional, with framing, sound, light and a quick edit.

Who it's for

Teams where nobody has filmed before, or staff who've been filming on autopilot and want better results. You don't need any experience or kit. If your team already films and wants to plan and make specific videos, Video for business is the better fit. Working on your own? One-to-one sessions are priced on request.

What we cover

  1. Choosing the right shape for where it's going (vertical, square or landscape).
  2. Framing, shot sizes and simple moves that keep people watching.
  3. Sound. The mic, where to put it and the settings that fix most problems.
  4. Light. Using a window and one small LED.
  5. Editing on your phone. A simple workflow, and when the AI features actually help.

By the end of the day

You'll have shot and edited a short clip that is well lit, clearly recorded and properly framed. You'll also know exactly what, if anything, is worth buying next.

You take home my printable checklist for filming an interview on a phone, and free guides to go back to, starting with how to film an interview on your phone.

Who teaches it

Me, Nigel Camp. I taught video at General Assembly in London for close to ten years, including Mobile Video: Produce Content Like a Pro, Creating Video Content on a Budget and a one-day Video Production Bootcamp (archived instructor page). For Cambridge University Press I ran two-day workshops with the original presenter team of the Learn English with Cambridge YouTube channel, which went on to reach 175,000 subscribers (checked October 2026). And I wrote The Video Effect (Rethink Press, 2014).

I still film for a living. Through DevilBoy Productions, which I set up in 2011, I've filmed for clients such as ICE, CBRE, Freshworks and Kew. The phone setup I use on paid jobs is in my guide to filming an interview on your phone.

How pricing works

A team day at your office starts at £1,395 + VAT for up to six people, and a full-day live online session for up to six people starts at £1,200 + VAT. One-to-one sessions are priced on request. The final price depends on how many people, where, and how long. Tell me those three things and I'll send a short plan and a fixed price within two working days, with no obligation. A 50% deposit confirms the date. If you'd like me to book a room in London, the hire cost is added at cost. Full workshop terms.
